# Errors and limits

> What each API error code means, and the rate limit for API keys.

Errors come back as JSON with a message and a code:

```json theme={null}
{ "error": "This API key needs the apps:deploy scope for this.", "code": "MISSING_SCOPE" }
```

| Status | Code | Meaning |
| - | - | - |
| 401 | `INVALID_API_KEY` | The key is wrong, revoked or expired. |
| 401 | `KEY_LOST_ACCESS` | The person who made the key is no longer in its team. |
| 403 | `MISSING_SCOPE` | The key needs another scope for this. The message names it. |
| 403 | `NOT_AVAILABLE_TO_API_KEYS` | Keys cannot be used for this at all, whatever their scopes. |
| 403 | `WRONG_WORKSPACE` | The request asked for a different workspace than the key belongs to. |
| 403 | `EMAIL_NOT_VERIFIED` | The account that owns the key has not verified its email. |
| 403 | `PLAN_LIMIT_REACHED` | Your plan does not allow this. The message says which limit. |
| 429 | `RATE_LIMITED` | More than 120 requests in a minute. `Retry-After` says when to try again. |

## Rate limit

Each key can make 120 requests a minute. Past that, requests get `429` with a `Retry-After`
header in seconds.
