# Database console

> Browse and edit your data, and run queries, from the database page in the dashboard.

Every database page has tools for working with your data without installing a client or opening a port. They work through the Symplax agent on your server, so they do not need [public access](https://docs.symplax.com/databases/public-access.md).

Open a database from **Databases**. The tabs you see depend on the engine:

| Tab | Engines | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **Data** | All | Browse tables, collections or keys |
| **Console** | PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, ClickHouse, MongoDB | Run queries or commands |
| **Query Log** | ClickHouse | Recent queries with duration and rows read |
| **Variables** | Redis, Valkey | The server's runtime configuration |
| **Logs** | All | The database container's logs |

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Data**, **Console**, **Query Log** and **Variables** need the database to be running. If it is stopped, start it from the **Settings** tab.

## By engine

**PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB**

**Data** lists your tables. Select one to:

* page through its rows,
* filter rows by column with **Filter rows** (equals, contains, less than, is empty, and so on),
* add, edit and delete rows with **Add Record** and the row actions,
* see its columns,
* download it with **Export CSV**,
* drop it.

**Create Table** opens a form where you name the table and define its columns, including primary key and not null. PostgreSQL also offers foreign keys; MySQL and MariaDB offer auto increment.

**Console** is a SQL editor. Type a query and press `Cmd+Enter` (or `Ctrl+Enter`) to run it. Results appear as a table, and **Recent queries** keeps your history.

**ClickHouse**

**Data** lists tables across your ClickHouse databases, with a preview of rows and the table's schema. **Create Table** lets you pick the table engine (MergeTree, ReplacingMergeTree, SummingMergeTree, AggregatingMergeTree, Memory or TinyLog) and the order-by columns.

**Export CSV** downloads a table. Exports stop at the first 10,000 rows.

**Console** is a SQL editor. Qualify table names with their database, for example `SELECT * FROM default.my_table LIMIT 10`. **Query Log** shows recent queries with their duration, rows and bytes read, and any exception.

**MongoDB**

**Data** lists your collections. You can create and drop collections, and for each collection:

* filter documents with a JSON filter,
* add a document with **Add Document**,
* edit or delete a document,
* view a document as JSON.

**Console** runs a database command, the same as `db.runCommand(...)` in the Mongo shell. Write the command as JSON, for example `{ "dbStats": 1 }`, or start from a preset such as `buildInfo`, `dbStats`, `listCollections`, `currentOp` or `serverStatus`.

**Redis, Valkey**

**Data** is a key browser. You can:

* search keys and filter them by type,
* open a key to see its value and its remaining TTL,
* edit the value of a string key,
* delete a key,
* add a key of type string, list, set or hash.

There is no free-form command console for Redis or Valkey. **Variables** shows the server's configuration, read only.

## Safety limits

The console blocks or confirms commands that could destroy data by accident:

* In SQL consoles for PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB, `DROP TABLE`, `TRUNCATE` and `DROP SCHEMA` ask you to confirm before they run.
* `DROP DATABASE` is never allowed from the console.
* In MongoDB, `dropDatabase`, `shutdown`, `dropAllUsersFromDatabase` and `dropAllRolesFromDatabase` are refused.
* For Redis and Valkey, `FLUSHALL`, `SHUTDOWN` and `CONFIG` commands are refused.

You can run up to 60 queries a minute from the console.

> [!TIP]

> Before running a migration or bulk change by hand, take a backup from the **Backups** tab. See [Backups](https://docs.symplax.com/databases/backups.md).

## Connecting your own client

If you prefer a desktop client such as TablePlus, DBeaver or pgAdmin, turn on [public access](https://docs.symplax.com/databases/public-access.md) for a limited time and use the public URL from the **Overview** tab.
