If you don't have a VPS, you can buy one from inside Symplax. A Symplax-provisioned server comes with the agent already installed and set up, and is billed by the hour from your [wallet](https://docs.symplax.com/billing/wallet.md). You pay for the hours it runs, and you can delete it at any time.

## Sizes

| Size | vCPU | RAM | Disk |
| - | - | - | - |
| Spark | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB SSD |
| Boost | 4 | 8 GB | 80 GB SSD |
| Surge | 8 | 16 GB | 160 GB SSD |
| Blaze | 16 | 32 GB | 320 GB SSD |

Every size runs the latest Ubuntu LTS in Helsinki, Finland. The purchase screen shows each size's hourly rate in your wallet's currency (NGN or USD). For current prices, see [symplax.com/pricing](https://symplax.com/pricing).

> [!NOTE]
>
> A size can be out of stock for a while. When that happens, the purchase is refused before anything is charged. Pick another size or try again later.

## Buy a server

**1. Top up your wallet**

You need enough balance to run the size you pick for 24 hours. If you don't have it, Symplax tells you how much more you need. See [wallet](https://docs.symplax.com/billing/wallet.md).

**2. Pick a size**

Go to **Servers**, click **New Server**, then choose **Buy a VPS**. Select a size.

**3. Name it and set a root password**

Give the server a name of 1 to 63 characters and choose a root password of at least 8 characters. Weak passwords are rejected.

You'll use this password for direct SSH access as `root`.

**4. Wait for setup**

Symplax creates the machine, waits for it to boot, and installs the agent. The servers page shows each stage. When it's done, the server is ready to [deploy to](https://docs.symplax.com/apps/deploy-from-github.md).

You can only have one purchase in progress at a time. If you click twice, the second attempt is refused.

## How billing works

* Billing starts when the server is ready, not when you click buy, so setup time is free.
* Your wallet is charged each hour the server runs, at the hourly rate shown when you bought it.
* There is no monthly cap. A server left running all month costs its hourly rate times the hours in the month.
* Deleting the server stops its billing.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Your plan (Free, Pro or Team) sets how many servers you can have, and servers you buy count toward that limit along with servers you connect. See [plans](https://docs.symplax.com/billing/plans.md).

## When your wallet runs low

Symplax checks every minute and handles a running-out balance in three stages.

**1. Low balance warning**

When your balance drops to ₦500 or \$1, you get an email and a dashboard notification with roughly how many hours you have left. The estimate covers all your running servers together.

**2. Paused at zero**

When your balance reaches zero, every server you bought is powered off. Your data stays on the disk. A paused server is not billed, and its apps and databases are offline. You get an email and a notification.

**3. Deleted after 24 hours**

If a server stays paused for 24 hours, it is permanently deleted along with everything on it. This can't be undone.

Top up at any point before the 24 hours run out and your paused servers power back on by themselves. You don't need to do anything else.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deletion after 24 hours paused is permanent, and that includes any databases on the server. Keep your wallet topped up, and keep [backups](https://docs.symplax.com/databases/backups.md) of anything you can't lose.

## Deleting a server you bought

Owners and admins can open the server's **Settings** tab and click **Destroy Server** under **Danger Zone**. This deletes the machine and everything on it, and stops its billing.

## Root access

You can SSH into the server as `root` with the password you chose. Symplax keeps password login for `root` turned on for these servers so that password works. Fail2Ban, which Symplax installs, blocks addresses after repeated failed logins. To change the password, open the server's **Settings** tab and use **Root Password**. It asks you to confirm by email first.

You can also use the in-browser [console](https://docs.symplax.com/servers/console.md) without setting up SSH on your machine.
