# Teams and roles

> Create a team, invite people by email, and choose what each of them can do with Owner, Admin, Developer and Viewer roles.

A team is a shared workspace. Servers, apps and databases you create while working in a team
belong to the team, not to you, and everyone in it works on the same set.

## Create a team

You need the **Team** plan to create a team. See [Plans](https://docs.symplax.com/billing/plans.md).

**1. Open the Team tab**

Go to **Settings** and open the **Team** tab.

**2. Create it**

Click **Create Team** and give it a name. You become its owner.

**3. Invite people**

Under **Invite someone**, enter an email address, pick a role and click **Send Invite**.

The person gets an email with a link to join. They accept it while signed in to the Symplax
account that uses that same email address.

> [!NOTE]
>
> An invite expires after 7 days. Sending a new invite to the same address replaces the pending
> one. Owners and admins can revoke a pending invite from the **Team** tab.

While you are on the Team plan, a team has no member limit. Plan limits inside a team, such as
servers or deploys per day, follow the team owner's plan, and they count the whole team's usage.

## Roles

| Role | In one line |
| - | - |
| **Owner** | The person who created the team. Everything an admin can do, plus renaming and deleting the team. |
| **Admin** | Manages everything and everyone except the team itself. Sees secrets and the server console. |
| **Developer** | Deploys and manages apps and databases. Secrets stay masked, and every reveal is logged. |
| **Viewer** | Read-only. Sees apps, servers and logs, changes nothing. |

A team has exactly one owner. You invite people as Admin, Developer or Viewer, and the default
is Developer.

## What each role can do

| Capability | Owner | Admin | Developer | Viewer |
| - | :-: | :-: | :-: | :-: |
| See servers, apps, databases and logs | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Deploy, redeploy, restart and roll back apps | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |

| Create, start, stop and delete databases, run backups and restores | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Manage cron jobs | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Read environment variable values | Yes | Yes | Masked, one reveal at a time | No |
| Read database passwords and connection strings | Yes | Yes | Only for databases they created | No |
| See and sign deploy hook secrets | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Open the server console (root shell) | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Restart, rename, recover or delete a server, update its agent, browse its files | Yes | Yes | No | No |

| See and revoke the team's API keys | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Rename or delete the team | Yes | No | No | No |

## Secrets

Only owners and admins see secrets: environment variable values, database passwords and deploy
hook secrets. This holds whoever created the resource. Creating something inside a team does not
make you its owner.

Developers get two narrow exceptions so they can do their job:

* **Environment variables.** A developer sees every variable name with its value masked. They
can reveal one value at a time. Each reveal is recorded in the audit log with the variable's
name, never its value. If the record cannot be written, the reveal is refused. Reveals are
  rate limited.
* **Their own databases.** A developer who created a database can read its password and
connection string, as long as they are still a developer or admin on the team.

> [!NOTE]
>
> An API key without the `secrets:read` scope sees no secret at all, whoever owns it. See
> [API keys](https://docs.symplax.com/api/keys.md).

## Server console

The [server console](https://docs.symplax.com/servers/console.md) is a root shell on the server, so only owners and admins
can open it. If an admin is demoted or removed while a console is open, Symplax closes that
console straight away.

## Access follows current membership

Access comes from your place in the team right now, not from what you created.

* **Removing a member** takes away their access immediately, including to apps and databases
  they created themselves.
* **Their team API keys stop working.** A key scoped to a team is refused once its owner is no
longer a member of that team.
* **Changing a role** takes effect on their next request. The member gets an email telling them
  their new role.

Owners and admins can remove any member except the owner. Any member can leave a team on their
own.

## Delete a team

Only the owner can delete a team, from the **Team** tab.

> [!WARNING]
>
> You cannot delete a team that still owns servers, apps or databases. Symplax lists what is in
> the way. Remove those first, then delete the team.
