Symplax can back up any database you create. Backups are stored off your server in storage that Symplax manages, so you do not need your own bucket or storage account.
Database backups are included on the Pro and Team plans. They are not available on Free. See Plans.

What a backup contains

Symplax uses each engine’s own dump tool, run on your server by the Symplax agent, then compresses and uploads the result.

Back up now

1

Open the Backups tab

Open the database from Databases and go to Backups.
2

Start the backup

Click Back Up Now. You can add a note, for example before deploying v2, so you can find it later.
3

Wait for it to finish

The backup runs in the background and shows as In Progress, then Completed or Failed.
Take a backup right before a risky migration or a bulk change from the console.

Scheduled backups

Use the schedule menu next to Back Up Now to choose Daily, Weekly or Monthly. Choose No schedule to turn scheduled backups off.
  • Daily runs every night.
  • Weekly runs every Sunday.
  • Monthly runs on the 1st of the month.
Scheduled backups only run while the database is running. A stopped database is skipped.

How long backups are kept

Each backup is kept for 30 days and then deleted automatically. Symplax never deletes the most recent completed backup of a database, even after 30 days, so you always have at least one. A backup that never finishes is marked Failed after 24 hours. You can delete any backup yourself from its row.

Download a backup

Click the download icon on a backup to get a download link. The link works for one hour. Use the file to keep your own copy, or to restore into a database somewhere else.

Restore a backup

1

Pick the backup

In Backups, click the restore icon on a completed backup.
2

Confirm

Click Yes, overwrite & restore. The Data tab shows the restore in progress, and a message tells you when it has completed or failed.
Restoring overwrites all current data in the database with the contents of the backup. Anything written after the backup was taken is lost. Take a fresh backup first if you might need the current data.
A restore goes back into the same database. PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB replay the dump into it. MongoDB drops each collection in the backup and restores it. ClickHouse drops the database and restores it. Redis and Valkey stop the container briefly, load the snapshot and start again, so expect a short interruption for apps using them.

Before you rely on backups

  • Backups and restores time out after five minutes of dumping or loading. Very large databases may not fit in that window.
  • A restore always goes back into the database the backup came from. To test a backup without touching that database, download it and load it into a local copy of the engine.
